Sustainable Textile Art at Klose & Soan: Yahvi, Peel Studio x Deptford X

A few weeks ago, on an otherwise ordinary Friday night, we at Klose & Soan had an unexpected visit that would soon shift the atmosphere of our restaurant. Textile artist Yahvi wandered in—curious, radiant, with stories of weaving, waste materials, and sustainability unfolding before us.

Peel Studio: A Culinary-Artistic Fusion

Yahvi’s practice, Peel Studio, perfectly aligned with our ethos: rooted in the zero‑waste traditions of her upbringing in India and refined through her experience at the Royal College of Art. What began as an interest in culinary arts and textiles evolved into an extraordinary craft—transforming everyday kitchen scraps into narrative, tactile woven pieces.

From Café by Chance to Gallery by Design

Yahvi was soon included in this years Deptford X, an artist collective that bridges communities and creativity—right here in our neighbourhood. This all led to the fascinating installation that will open in the restaurant on Saturday 12th July. The usual scraps—lemon peels, onion skins, date pits and more—from our kitchen and staff have become both material and muse for her weaving loom.

Waste Transformed: The Art of the Everyday

What makes Yahvi’s work so special is its authenticity. She explained how natural dyes from onion and lemon skins impart soft, earthy tones, while eggshells add delicate texture. Each piece woven from these remnants invites viewers to reconsider notions of waste, beauty, and purpose. It’s a visual and sensory reminder of resourcefulness and circularity.

Klose & Soan Meets Slow-Made Textiles

With pieces displayed in our front window and along the dining room walls, we’re excited to see what Yahvi has created using our kitchen and bar waste—pieces that feel like our story as much as hers and of our time. Muted, organic textures and hues—often hand-dyed— will reveal their culinary origins. We hope the juxtaposition of relaxed dining and humble kitchen detritus sparks conversation and curiosity.

Why It Matters to Us

At Klose & Soan, we are deeply committed to narrative-driven hospitality: every dish tells a story, and every ingredient holds meaning. Yahvi’s textiles echo this mindful approach—each item quite literally woven from discarded fragments of the kitchen, the very place where the restaurant’s life begins. Together, we bring you a multisensory celebration of resourcefulness, craft, and a rethinking of our own core values.

We’re honoured to be hosting Yahvi’s collaboration with Deptford X and her kitchen-waste-inspired textiles here at Klose & Soan. It reminded us that art, like cooking, is about transformation: taking what’s commonplace—or even discarded—and giving it new life, new meaning, and a reason to pause and appreciate.

We invite you to join us on Saturday 12th July for the exhibition’s opening night— Yahvi’s work will be on show until Thursday 17th July.
