Short Film Screening & Gaza Solidarity Fundraiser - When You Were Young Were You Afraid of The Moon? By Phoebe Cottam
We welcome you to join us on Thursday 26th for a fundraiser screening of the short film When You Were Young Were You Afraid of The Moon? By Phoebe Cottam.
About the film:
Nawal moved to Berlin from Palestine to establish a life away from occupation, leaving behind her mother, an Israeli activist living in the West Bank. Three years later and her chosen city is increasingly divided on the genocide in Gaza and German military support for Israel. A meditation on daughterhood, motherhood and complex inheritance, the film explores the legacies of resistance passed down between Neta and Nawal at a moment of immense turmoil and asks the question of how these huge forces are processed within a family. As we drift between 2024 Berlin and 2018 Palestine, Nawal and her mother navigate the challenges of separation, individuation and the evolution of two adults negotiating new and changing spaces. A film about the human lives and relationships that are affected by the political world, and how powerful resistance movements are born from the day-to-day struggles of real people and their love for each other.
About the Khalil Abu Yahia Gaza Solidarity Fund:
Khalil was a political activist, teacher, and poet who believed in collective liberation and solidarity across borders. He was a student of postcolonial literature and was active in the movement for the Palestinian right of return. On October 29th, 2023, he was killed alongside his wife, young daughters, and other relatives by an Israeli air strike in Gaza.
In late January of this year, Khalil's family returned to the rubble of their home in northern Gaza. Since then, his brother Ahmad and the other surviving members of the Abu Yahia family have struggled to maintain their lives in Gaza City. Ahmad has launched a project in Khalil's memory to provide water and fresh vegetables to families in northern Gaza, where food and water shortages are catastrophic. This project is an extension of Khalil’s belief that solidarity and collective action can illuminate even the darkest moments.
All donations go towards raising funds to support the Abu Yahia family and this project more broadly.
